About SBP Airport: The San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP) began as one man's dream. Earl Thomson, along with his brothers-in-law, William “Chris” and David Hoover, talked county officials into leasing them the land. In April 1939, the airport opened with a single 88-by-100 foot hangar and dirt runways.
Hard surface runways and lights were installed by the War Department in 1940. In 1940 and 1941, 183 private pilots and 20 advanced students were trained here through a federally sponsored Civilian Pilot Training Program for armed services fliers.
The federal government took over the airport during World War II, turning it back to the county in 1946. In 1947, county supervisors contracted for another hangar, ramp, and eventually an administration building. The supervisors named Chris Hoover full-time airport manager in 1953. Additionally, Southwest Airways inaugurated a passenger and airline service that year lasting till 1955. In 1955 they replaced their DC-3s with Martin 404s, which were too large for the 4,000 foot runway. At this point the airline moved to Paso Robles, and air service was canceled until 1969 when Swift Aire Lines started passenger service.
The San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport was dedicated as McChesney Field in 1987, in honor of Leroy E. McChesney for his leadership and dedication to aviation. Mr. McChesney resided in the county since 1920 and had been a pilot since 1949. He was a longtime member of the California Aviation Council, a member of the California Aeronautics Board, and other aviation organizations. Mr. McChesney was the Grand Marshal of the first Airport Day in 1984.
Airport facilities now include a terminal building, restaurant, hangars, and numerous other airplane related businesses. In 1988, an air traffic control tower was opened by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). By this time SBP had scheduled service from Wings West, Skywest, WestAir, and later American Eagle. Passenger service from San Luis Obispo was here to stay. Service today is provided by United Airlines, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines through their respective regional partners.
Located just south of the City of San Luis Obispo, the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport serves areas as far north as Southern Monterey County and as far south as Northern Santa Barbara County. The airport offers convenient access to and from the Central Coast. Residents and visitors have the choice of two commercial airlines with flights to Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. The airport is also home to full service general aviation and corporate facilities.
There are two regional carriers at San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport.
They are affiliated with major carriers with connections to domestic and international cities.

In the late 70′s and early 80′s businesses would stay open late on Thursday nights to give people a chance to shop later than 5:00 p.m. Downtown was popular on Thursday nights so teens began cruising down Higuera Street, the “main drag.” This, in turn, deterred people from coming to shop on Thursday nights. The merchants wanted help from the Downtown Association to stop what was going on. The Downtown Association decided to barricade six blocks of Higuera on Thursday nights so people could still shop late. Now the trick was getting people to come back on Thursday nights!
On the late shopping night, the Downtown Association began arranging for special activities and entertainment on Higuera Street. Downtown restaurants came out to offer food and to barbecue ribs. This all began in early 1983. That summer the farmers were invited to sell their produce; hence the beginning of Farmers' Market. Because the event is sponsored by the Downtown Association, only Downtown Association members and non-profit organizations were eligible to participate. In July of 2006 the Market opened up to non members allowing them to participate at a cost of $80 per night. A committee meets the second Wednesday of each month (see TNP Committee page) to discuss all applications and to manage the event.
Thursday Night Promotions (also called Farmers' Market) are very popular. It is a year-round event, and the summer months draw large crowds to the Downtown Association district. From September through June the Downtown Association sponsors various special events at the market. Thursday nights are so successful and well run that cities from all over the country visit San Luis Obispo to see how it is done!
For more information about Thursday Night Promotions please call the Downtown Association office (805) 541-0286 and talk to the Farmers' Market Event Coordinator.
To Foster an Economically Vibrant Downtown.
The Downtown Association primarily serves its members in the areas of Parking, Promotions, Design, Economic Activities and Thursday Night Promotions. (See our Committee Page) Committees for these issues are comprised of business owners, employees and the public at large. The 11-member Board of Directors is comprised of business owners and managers.
One important fact about the Downtown Association operation is that it is entirely voluntary, with the exception of the staff, and that it is a member-run organization. The businesses are their own guide and determine the ultimate direction of the Downtown Association.
The Downtown Association's current Strategic Business Plan was updated in 2013 by retired Executive Director Deborah Cash.

Discover this legendary estate's history, and learn more about its twenty five thousand artifacts, before seeing it in person.
Hearst Castle's history begins in 1865, when George Hearst purchased 40,000 acres of ranchland. After his mother's death in 1919, William Randolph Hearst inherited thousands of acres around San Simeon, and over time, he purchased more. The spread eventually encompassed about 250,000 acres. With architect, Julia Morgan , Hearst conceived a retreat he called La Cuesta Encantada—Spanish for “Enchanted Hill.” By 1947, when Hearst had to leave the remote location because of his fragile health, the estate was still unfinished even though it comprised 165 rooms and 123 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways—all built to Hearst's specifications and showcasing a legendary art collection.
Before you walk through Hearst Castle's larger-than-life rooms, and explore its grandeur while on a tour, learn more about the history behind some of its most notable and storied rooms, gardens and pools.

William Randolph Hearst, the man who conceived Hearst Castle, was a media genius whose influence extended to publishing, politics, Hollywood, the art world and everyday American life. Plan Morro Bay is a two-year process to update the City's General Plan and Local Coastal Program, as required by California state law. The documents will look toward the future of our community and address issues such as transportation, housing, open space, conservation, and safety. The final documents, the "blueprint" and the "greenprint" will present the City's intended long-term development and conservation policies.
The City's Plan Morro Bay project team includes City staff and a consultant team led by Michael Baker International. The project team will work with the City's seven-member General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) throughout the project and will seek frequent input from the community at large.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The City of Morro Bay is currently undertaking a two-year process to update the City's General Plan and Local Coastal Plan, as required by California state law. The documents will look toward the future of our community and address issues such as transportation, housing, open space, conservation, safety, and more. The project team will work with the General Plan Advisory Committee throughout the project and will seek frequent input from the community at large.
The final documents, the “blueprint” and the “greenprint,” will present the City's intended long-term development and conservation policies. A program environmental impact report (EIR) will be prepared to address the potential impacts of these plans, and comprehensive updates to the Zoning Ordinance and Local Implementation Plan will follow to ensure they are aligned with the General Plan and Local Coastal Program.
Over the next one to two years, the City of Morro Bay will be working with you to define our future. We need your input as we work to update the City's General Plan/Local Coastal Program and Zoning Code update.
The City of Morro Bay develops a set of strategic, long-term goals for the community and then adopts specific, two-year objectives related to each goal. This page provides detail on the City's goals and objectives, including what they are and tracks how we're doing working toward each goal.
The City of Morro Bay is a general law city and operates under the "Council-Manager" form of municipal government. The 5-member City Council consist of the directly-elected Mayor and 4 City Council Members. The Mayor is elected to a 2-year term and Council Members are elected to 4-year terms.
The City Council is the legislative authority and sets the policies under which the city operates. The City Council has the power to adopt ordinances and resolutions, make appointments to the city's advisory bodies, establish policies and approve programs, appropriate funds, adopt budgets, and approve contracts. The Mayor presides at all meetings of the City Council and is recognized as the official head of the city for all ceremonial purposes.

One such specialist was Dr. Edison French. After he served with the Navy Medical Corps, Dr. French settled in San Luis Obispo. In 1946 French purchased the San Luis Sanitarium on Marsh Street.
Dr. French renamed the sanitarium "French Hospital." There he began to practice state-of-the art medicine. He claimed to be the first surgeon in San Luis Obispo to use intravenous anesthesia, the first to perform a lung resection, and the first to do a collapsed lung therapy. He was also the first specialist to actively encourage other specialists to settle in the area.
In 1972, Dr. Edison French closed the doors to the French Hospital located on Marsh Street and opened the doors to a larger French Hospital located on Johnson Avenue in San Luis Obispo. Dr. French passed away in 1976, but he is still remembered and loved today. Dr. French cared deeply about his patients and his staff and he always reached out to his employees and made them feel like family. French Hospital today is the city of San Luis Obispo's only not-for-profit hospital.
